Assessment and Promotion Criteria

The college conducts academic assessments regularly to evaluate students’ mastery of syllabic content and skills. Besides tests and assignments which form part of the Continual Assessment, the college conducts Mid-Year Examinations and End-of-Year Examinations in JC1 as well as Common Tests, Mid-Year Examinations and Preliminary Examinations in JC2. 

Grading System


For H1 and H2 subjects, the pass grades are A to E, with A being the highest and E the lowest grade. Students who fail to obtain a pass may be awarded S (Sub-pass) or U (Ungraded).

It is compulsory for students to sit for all components/papers of the subjects they are taking.


Promotion to JC2


Promotion to JC2 will be based on the student’s performance in the JC1 assessments. The weightings of the various assessment components are as follows:

To be promoted to JC2, students must meet the following criteria.

(1) Students who are taking 3 H2 and 1 H1 content subject

  • At least 1 H2 pass* 
  • Sub-passes (“S” grade) in all other subjects (i.e. 2 H2, 1 H1 content and GP) 

(2) Students who are taking 4 H2

  • At least 1 H2 pass* 
  • Sub-passes (“S” grade) in all other subjects (i.e. 3 H2 and GP) 

(3) Students who are repeating JC1

  • 3 H2 passes* 
  • Sub-passes (“S” grade) in all other subjects (i.e. 1 H1 content and GP) 


Passing criteria for JC2


To attain a pass in JC2 assessments, students must meet the following criteria.

(1) Students who are taking 3 H2 and 1 H1 content subject 

  • At least 2 H2 passes* 
  • 1 H1 pass* in the content subject 

(2) Students who are taking 4H2
  • At least 3 H2 passes*
