House Byron

Students of Byron House

Who is the house named after?
Augusta Ada Byron was an English mathematician and writer mostly known for her work on the analytical engine. Her notes on the engine include what is recognised as the first algorithm intended to be carried out by a machine. She is often described as the world's first computer programmer. Her mind-set of "poetical science" led her to ask basic questions about the Analytical Engine, examining how individuals and society relate to technology as a collaborative tool.

House Motto
Be the best you can be.

House Totem/Animal
The Wolf

Attributes of House Members
Byron House members collaborate and work well towards a common goal. Like their house namesake, members are inquisitive and are able to manage challenging situations well. As all house members are team players, it is apt that the house totem is the wolf. Like wolves in a pack, they are unbreakable as a team and have a sense of commitment, not only to the house and college, but also to any task they undertake.

House Keller

Who is the house named after?
Helen Adams Keller was an American author, political activist, and lecturer. She was the first deaf and blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree. Keller once said, "Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trail and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved."

Thus despite Keller’s disabilities, she triumphed over every obstacle that stood in her way. She proves to us that one can succeed with strength of character, determination and passion. Her experiences and triumphs over her disabilities have led her to become a role model for millions of disabled people all over the world.

James Cleveland “Jesse” Owens was an African American track and field athlete who specialised in the sprints and the long jump and was recognised in his lifetime as ‘perhaps the greatest and most famous athlete in track and field history’. Known for his fortitude and passion for running, he overcame great challenges to pursue his sport. Despite the risk and misgivings of others, he participated in the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany, where he achieved international fame by winning four gold medals and was the most successful athlete at the Games. This victory was especially poignant and often noted because Adolf Hitler had intended for the 1936 games to promote the Nazis’ elitist and racist ideals.
